THE BRIEF
|
THE SCOREBOARD Twelve markets, one dollar | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| How to read it: Posture (0-100) is the 20-day CCI scaled to a bar. The dot under each market is its Golden Thread signal: Rising = CCI above yesterday and above its 14-day average; Falling = below both; Mixed = anything in between. Last and Today are front-month futures as of 7:12 AM ET, change vs. the prior settle. Posture and the signal are computed on completed daily closes (ETF proxies; Nasdaq Composite index; SPY for the S&P 500 today), so they update once a day and do not yet include this morning's moves. |
SUPERCYCLE SCORE 8 / 100 Strong Headwind | The Score is the inverse of the dollar. UUP closed at $28.92 on 10/21, 92.1% of its 52-week closing range ($26.47 low on 1/27, $29.13 high on 10/12). A dollar this close to its high is still a stiff headwind for everything priced in it. |

THE LEAD
An Oil Scare Before Breakfast, and a Board That Waits for the Close
The metals took a beating overnight. The dollar didn't move. That gap is the whole story this morning.
Wednesday afternoon, Saudi state media reported an attack on an Aramco oil field in the kingdom's Eastern Region, per Yahoo Finance. Overnight, drone attacks on Saudi oil sites pushed crude higher, per Business Standard. As of 7:12 AM Eastern, WTI futures are up 1.8% to $98.88. Everything shiny is down. Gold futures are off 1.4% to $4,090. Silver is down 3.3% to $55.83. Platinum is down 2.9%, palladium 3.4%, and copper 2.4%. Nasdaq 100 futures are down 1.7%, with Tesla sliding about 4% after hours on its report (Yahoo Finance).
And the dollar index? Up one hundredth of a point, to 101.52.
That matters for how you read the morning. When metals fall because the dollar is ripping, the supercycle has a real problem. When they fall while the dollar sits still, something else is doing the selling. Today it looks like an inflation scare: higher oil means hotter prices, hotter prices mean a Fed that stays tight, and the metals get sold on the worry (medium confidence on the motive; the tape only shows the move). In India, Kedia Advisory read gold's drop as longs unwinding and silver's as fresh selling, per Business Standard.
Now the part this board is built for. None of this morning's drop is in the Golden Thread yet. The thread runs on completed daily closes, and here is what Wednesday's close said.
Silver held green for a second day. SLV rose 0.27% to $52.26 and its CCI improved from -90 to -88, above its 14-day average of -107. Corn did the same. CORN rose 0.67% to $17.98 and its CCI climbed from -139 to -129, above its average of -132. Both are still turning up from deep lows, not running. But two days is better than one.
Gold did something odd. GLD rose 0.34% to $378.95 and still printed red. Its CCI slipped from -75 to -79, below its 14-day average of -74. An up day with a weaker reading underneath is how a trend tells you it's tired. This morning's $60 drop in gold futures fits that read.
Platinum's three-day green run ended. PPLT fell 1.2% to $14.77 and its CCI dropped from -62 to -85. It's still above its average of -107, so it slides to yellow, not red. Palladium is yellow too. Copper fell 0.53% and turned red as its CCI fell from -38 to -81. Nat gas lost 5% to $9.97 and stays red, posture 12. Soybeans are red at posture 9.
Crude is the one that likes this morning. USO slipped 0.5% Wednesday to $159.80, and its CCI cooled from 141 to 118. That's still far above its average of 45, posture 83. Crude stays yellow: an extended trend catching its breath, now with a fresh headline under it.
The dollar's red thread lasted exactly one day. UUP edged up 0.07% to $28.92. Its CCI ticked from -4 to +4. That's higher than Tuesday but still far below its 14-day average of 79, so the thread goes back to mixed. The price sits at 92.1% of its 52-week range, which takes the Supercycle Score from 9 to 8. Still a Strong Headwind.
Stocks had a good Wednesday. The Nasdaq rose 1.05% to 26,703, the S&P 500 gained about 0.6%, and the Dow added 360 points to 52,856, per Yahoo Finance. SpaceX jumped about 8% after its results. Netflix fell 4% to 5% on a soft forecast. Both index threads are yellow, improving but still under their averages. This morning's futures have given most of that back.
The Turtle Traders had a rule for mornings like this: the open is noise until the close says otherwise. Silver is green on the books and red on the screen. Today's close decides which one counts.
MACRO
Macro Backdrop and the Dollar Event
The Treasury curve at Tuesday's close, per the Fed's daily data: 1-month bills at 4.10%, the 2-year at 4.79%, the 10-year at 5.12%, and the 30-year at 5.42%. Wednesday's official curve wasn't posted yet at press time. Yahoo Finance showed the 10-year near 5.15% late Wednesday, up about 3 basis points (medium confidence until the official print).
Oil is the swing factor now. A $98 barrel with fresh attacks in Saudi Arabia keeps the inflation worry alive. That gives the Fed a reason to stay tight, and a tight Fed is what keeps the dollar near the top of its range.
The Dollar Event is the FOMC meeting on October 27 and 28. The decision lands Wednesday the 28th at 2:00 PM Eastern, six days from today. A Fed that holds steady while oil runs would be a soft-dollar setup. A hike to fight oil would test the metals again.
POSITIONING
The Smart-Money and Event Tell
The next CFTC Commitment of Traders report comes out Friday, October 23. It covers the week through Tuesday, October 20. The latest report, for the week ended October 13, showed large speculators 62.36% net long dollar index futures at 12,919 contracts, still adding. In gold, speculators were 86.76% net long at 207,879 contracts, trimming for at least a fourth straight week.
This morning backs up that gold trim. Business Standard cited Kedia Advisory reading the gold drop as long unwinding, with open interest falling as prices fell. Silver showed the opposite: open interest rose as prices fell, which reads as fresh short selling. Fresh shorts in a market whose thread is green on the close is a setup worth watching. If silver closes green again today, those shorts are leaning against the trend.
FROM THE PORCH
The Taintsville Take
The 42nd annual Space Coast State Fair opens October 29 in Viera, per Space Coast Daily.
Forty-two years. Every fall a crew rolls into a field, sets up the rides, strings the lights, and gets the funnel cake fryers going. When it's over, it's all folded up on trucks and the field is a field again. And next October, there it is.
Anybody who grew up in North Brevard knows the best ride at any fair is the one that drops you. Your stomach leaves before you do. For about two seconds you are sure this is how it ends. Then the ride levels out, still sitting on the same steel frame it sat on before, and you climb off grinning and go get in line again.
That's this morning in the metals. Silver fell 3% before sunrise and it feels like the floor gave out. Maybe it did. But the frame this board watches is the close, and silver's frame was green on Wednesday. The drop is the ride. The close is the frame.
Coke-TV runs today as "drone strike sends oil soaring." Pepsi-TV runs it as "gold tumbles as Fed fears return." Neither one mentions a field in Viera where the rides go up every year right on time, whatever the oil market is doing.
The drop is what you feel. The frame is what holds. Silver dropped hard this morning. Today's close tells you whether the frame is still standing.
Two greens, four reds, and a dollar that refused to pick a side. Ride out the open, judge the close, and keep your eyes on the 28th. - Brad
