First trading session back from Labor Day. Today's board still reflects Friday, September 4, 2026's close since Monday's holiday left no fresh print. Tuesday's action is the first real test of what's below.
Palladium and Metals Slide as the Dollar's Grind Continues
The Trader's Brief
The Supercycle Score sits at 24, Strong Headwind. The dollar (UUP) closed Friday at $28.08, in the upper third of its own 52-week range, and that keeps commodities pushing against a current rather than with one.
The dollar's own CCI(20) flipped from deeply negative to just above zero on Friday's close and, for the first time in more than two weeks, closed above its 14-day average. One session is a flag, not a trend.
Gold, Silver, and Platinum all read red. Corn and Soybeans read red too, still accelerating against the recent bounce. Copper and the Nasdaq read green. Crude Oil, Nat Gas, and Palladium are the board's live wires, all reading Posture above 80.
CPI for August prints Friday, September 11 at 8:30 AM ET, the last major data point before the Fed's rate decision on September 15-16.
The Supercycle Score: 24 (Strong Headwind)
The Score measures where the dollar sits inside its own 52-week range, then inverts it: a stronger dollar means a lower Score. Friday's close of $28.08 put the dollar at roughly the upper third of its own range, a strong position for the dollar and a headwind for the commodity-supercycle thesis this newsletter tracks. A low Score does not mean commodities cannot rally. It means they are rallying against the current, not with it.
The Scoreboard
Each instrument is scored on its own 20-day Commodity Channel Index, then colored by the Golden Thread rule: green when the reading is rising day-over-day and above its own 14-day average, red when it is falling and below, yellow otherwise. Posture converts the raw reading into a 0-100 read on how stretched that instrument is right now.

The Headline Story: A Dollar That Might Be Turning
The most interesting number on the board isn't the Score itself, it's the dollar's own CCI reading underneath it. Through most of the last two-plus weeks, the dollar's 20-day CCI sat deeply negative and consistently below its own 14-day average, exactly the setup Golden Thread colors red. Friday's close pushed that reading from deeply negative to just barely positive, and for the first time in that stretch, it closed above its 14-day average too.
One session of green doesn't undo two-plus weeks of red. But it's the kind of early signal this newsletter exists to catch before it's obvious to everyone else. If the dollar's CCI holds green through Tuesday's fresh close, and especially through Friday's CPI print, that's a real shift, and the Score would likely start climbing out of Strong Headwind territory. If it snaps back red on the first real trading day of the week, treat Friday's reading as noise from a thin, pre-holiday tape.
Macro Backdrop
Two dates matter more than anything else on the calendar this week. CPI for August prints Friday, September 11 at 8:30 AM ET, the last major inflation read before the Federal Reserve's meeting on September 15-16. Markets are pricing in a rate cut at that meeting; a hot CPI number complicates that bet, a soft one locks it in.
The broader liquidity backdrop is worth a beat of attention here too. Michael Howell, who runs CrossBorder Capital and wrote Capital Wars, has spent years arguing that global central bank balance sheets and collateral flows, not headline rates, are the real driver of asset prices in this era. His framework has been calling for renewed liquidity expansion as central banks manage their own sovereign refinancing walls. It's a thesis, not a fact, and it's the kind of macro current this Score sits on top of. Worth tracking into the Fed decision, not worth trading on its own.
Layer in Friday's stronger-than-expected jobs report, continued political pressure on the Fed to cut faster, and simmering geopolitical risk around the Strait of Hormuz, and you have a dollar with real crosscurrents pulling on it into a week with two major catalysts back to back.
Smart Money: COT Check
Straight talk: the Commitment of Traders feed we pull from is only returning 2024-vintage figures again this morning. We are not going to hand you a current positioning read built on year-and-a-half-old numbers dressed up as fresh. The CFTC's next scheduled weekly release lands Friday. We'll have a real update then.
The Taintsville Take
Down here on the Space Coast, sea turtles are having the kind of year that would make any momentum trader jealous. This nesting season is running at a record pace, thousands more nests logged along Florida's beaches than in recent years, with roughly two months of nesting season still to go. Local news is treating it like a done deal: banner year, best on record, book it.
Except it isn't done. A nest laid isn't a hatchling that made it to the water. Predators, storms, and beachfront lighting all get a vote between now and when those eggs actually hatch. Florida's wildlife folks have been careful to say the number that matters, hatch success, won't be known for months yet.
Sound familiar? One green candle on the dollar's momentum chart isn't a confirmed trend any more than a record nest count is a confirmed record hatch. Both need time to prove out. Down here, we'll take the good news, and we'll wait for the data to catch up before we call it.
